What version of Windows do I have? What do: build number, edition mean? – Practical tip

Windows 11 is the official version of the Microsoft operating system (OS) and like all previous versions, Windows 11 also receives major updates from time to time, including a major annual update. The updates can change a lot of how the operating system works. So sometimes it can be important to check what version of Windows you have. In addition to these major annual updates, there are some features that may be added through smaller updates. Also, there are features that are only available in certain editions of Windows 11, like Windows Sandbox, which is only available in Windows 11 Pro or higher. You can easily check which version of Windows you have.

How to check your Windows version

Simply open the “Settings” (gear icon), then select the item “System”. On the left, select the “About” option and click on it.

Alternative quick way to find house in Windows version:

  1. Press the Windows key + R on your keyboard to open the “Run” window.
  2. Type “winver” (without the quotes) and press Enter.
  3. A window with information about the installed version of Windows WILL appear. This should indicate the version and build level of your operating system.

Under Windows Specifications you can see all the information about Windows 11, including the edition, version and build number. These inputs all have a different meaning, which we will now present in more detail.

Windows edition

First off, the Windows 11 edition determines some features that you may or may not have access to. Windows 11 Home is the basic version and includes most of the features that a regular user needs. Windows 11 Pro comes with BitLocker encryption, Hyper-V virtualization, Windows Sandbox and more. There are a few editions of Windows 11 with different feature sets, but these two are the most common.

Windows version

The version number indicates when your current Windows version or feature update was released. New Windows 11 feature updates should appear in the second half of each year. The first release is version 21H2, which refers to the year 2021 and refers to the fact that the update was released in the second half of the year. Version 22H2 followed in 2022, version 23H2 in 2023 and this will continue in the years to come. These updates differ from the cumulative updates YOU receive every month, where only the build number changes.

build number

The build number can be a little more specific about which updates you have installed. As mentioned, you’ll get cumulative updates every month, even though feature updates only come out once a year. These focus on security and stability, but can also enable entirely new features, so it’s good to know the specific build number. If you receive a cumulative update, the minor build number will change. For example, for Windows 11 Version 21H2, Build 22000.xx WILL be displayed, with xx increasing with each cumulative update. If you have Windows 11 version 22H2, the build number will be 22621.xx etc.

Windows Performance / Windows Feature Experience Pack

Another item on this page is the Windows Feature Experience Pack that you have installed. Microsoft hasn’t talked about it much, but the Windows Feature Experience Pack can enable certain features and possibilities in Windows 11. In the past some of these packages were already released for Windows Insiders, but it is not yet clear that these packages can contain everything. it may be important to know for troubleshooting or when getting support with a problem.
